Frequently asked questions
About the Half-Day Rafting Tour
What level are the rapids on the Mendoza River?+
The stretch we run has class II (lower intermediate) and class III (intermediate) rapids. It's ideal for beginners who want a bit of adrenaline. It's not extreme, but it's not a flat float either: you'll feel the power of the river and you'll have to paddle.
How many kilometers do we raft?+
We run roughly 12 kilometers of the Mendoza River, on the stretch from Cacheuta to Potrerillos. It's the most popular and best-rated stretch for recreational rafting in the country. The run takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes of actual time on the water.
Do I need to know how to swim?+
Yes, being able to swim is a safety requirement. Although a life jacket is mandatory and the chance of falling in is low, if you do fall in you need to be able to stay afloat and move around until the guide picks you up. You don't need to be a strong swimmer, just the basics.
Is rafting in Mendoza safe?+
Yes, completely. The operators are licensed by the Mendoza authorities and carry current insurance, and the guides are certified (most of them internationally). The gear is high quality and in perfect condition. Serious accidents in commercial rafting in Mendoza are extremely rare.
How cold is the water?+
The Mendoza River is fed by snowmelt from the Andes, so the water is cold all year round (between 8°C and 14°C depending on the season). That's why a wetsuit is mandatory and included. With the wetsuit on, you don't feel the cold except when water splashes your face.
When is the best time of year for rafting?+
Between October and April, when snowmelt keeps the river high. December, January and February have the best flow and the warmest water (relatively speaking). In May the flow starts to drop. Between June and September rafting is usually suspended or reduced because of minimal flow.
How is this different from the Hot Springs + Rafting Combo?+
Half-Day Rafting is just rafting, and it ends by midday. The Combo adds an afternoon at the hot springs to relax after the activity. If you want only rafting and a free afternoon, choose this one. If you want to combine adventure and rest on the same day, choose the Combo.
Are there changing rooms?+
Yes, the camp has separate men's and women's changing rooms with hot showers. You can arrive in regular clothes, change into the wetsuit before the activity, and after the run change back and shower if you like.
Can I bring my phone or a camera?+
We don't recommend taking your phone or cameras on the raft. The operators have lockers where you leave all your belongings before the activity. Only action cameras like a GoPro, with a proper mount and strapped to your body. The operators usually have a photographer at key spots and sell the professional photos at the end.
How long is the Half-Day Rafting Tour?+
The full tour lasts 5 hours. We leave Mendoza at 9:00 am, reach the camp at 9:45 am, do the briefing and gear-up, run the river from about 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, change and have coffee, and get back to Mendoza around 2:00 pm.
