The Andes can't be explained. They have to be crossed. You leave Mendoza at seven in the morning, and by mid-afternoon you're standing at 3,200 meters, looking at the highest mountain in the Americas with the wind in your face. This is the once-in-a-lifetime tour.

Twelve hours along Route 7: the turquoise Potrerillos reservoir, the town of Uspallata, Los Penitentes, Puente del Inca and the Aconcagua Viewpoint, all the way to Las Cuevas, the last village before the tunnel to Chile. With a bilingual guide who knows every bend in the road.

The turquoise reservoir ringed by mountains, our first photo stop. It's the gateway to the mountains.

  3. Stop 2

A mountain town at 1,750 meters, a historic crossing point for muleteers and for the Army of the Andes. Time for a coffee and a walk through the valley.

  4. Stop 3

    Los Penitentes

At 2,580 meters, the rock formations that look like praying monks give the place its name. Snow in winter; colorful mountains in summer.

  5. Stop 4

    Puente del Inca

The natural bridge of stone and sulfur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the ruins of the old thermal hotel beneath it. Lunch in the area, at your own expense.

  6. Stop 5

A short walk to the Provincial Park viewpoint: Aconcagua, 6,962 meters, the roof of the Americas. Time for photos and to breathe the high-altitude air.

Frequently asked questions

About the High Andes Tour

How high does the High Andes Tour go?+

The route passes through Uspallata at 1,750 m above sea level, Los Penitentes at 2,580 m, Puente del Inca at 2,720 m and the Aconcagua Viewpoint at 2,800 m. Mount Aconcagua, which you see from the viewpoint, is 6,962 meters high and is the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere.

Will the altitude affect me on the High Andes Tour?+

Most travelers feel no altitude discomfort on this route. The highest point reached is 2,800 m above sea level at the Aconcagua Viewpoint, an altitude that is well tolerated. Some sensitive people may feel slight tiredness or shortness of breath, which eases by drinking water and walking slowly. If you have a pre-existing heart or respiratory condition, check with your doctor before traveling.

What should I bring on the High Andes Tour?+

Bring warm clothes in layers (it's cold at altitude even in summer), comfortable closed-toe shoes, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap, a camera or charged phone, water and a snack. In winter, add a waterproof jacket, gloves and a hat. The sun at altitude is very strong even when it's cold.

Is it suitable for children and older travelers?+

Yes, the High Andes Tour is suitable for all ages. It's a scenic route by vehicle, with no demanding hikes, so older travelers and families with children enjoy it without any trouble. If you're traveling with babies or people with reduced mobility, write to us before booking so we can coordinate the details.

What happens if it rains or snows on the day of the tour?+

The High Andes Tour runs practically all year. If weather conditions are safe, the tour goes ahead, and the snowy landscapes are spectacular. Only if the road is closed for safety reasons (closures by Vialidad Nacional, the national highway authority) is the tour rescheduled at no cost, or we refund your money. We contact you the night before if there's an alert.

Are there restroom stops along the way?+

Yes, we make several stops throughout the day. There are restrooms in Potrerillos, at the lunch restaurant in Uspallata, in Puente del Inca and in Las Cuevas. There's never more than 1 hour and 30 minutes of driving between stops.

Can you go to Aconcagua, or do you only see it from the viewpoint?+

The High Andes Tour does not enter Aconcagua Provincial Park. What we do is reach the Aconcagua Viewpoint, a platform with a spectacular head-on view of the mountain. Entering the park requires a separate permit, high-mountain gear and several days of acclimatization; it's not something done on a day tour.

Is it better to do the High Andes Tour in winter or summer?+

Each season has its charm. In summer (December to March) the road is clear, the days are long and you see all the colors of the mountains. In winter (June to September) the snow transforms the landscape, Los Penitentes are covered in white and Aconcagua looks even more imposing. The temperature changes, but the tour runs all year.

How long is the High Andes Tour?+

It's a full-day tour lasting about 11 and a half hours. We leave Mendoza city at 7:00 am and return at approximately 6:30 pm. The total route is about 400 km round trip along the historic Route 7.

Do I need a passport for the High Andes Tour?+

No, the tour takes place entirely in Argentine territory. We go as far as Las Cuevas, the last village before the international tunnel to Chile, but we don't cross the border. Even so, we recommend carrying your ID in case of police checkpoints on Route 7.
